Adopt-a-Plant - Beautify Our School
You might have noticed change is afoot. There was a dry patch of sand between the kindergarten and the toilets which has been dug and composted, and seems to be waiting for something to happen! Next Friday after school you will see it full of water-wise, indigenous plants sitting in their bags and waiting for some loving family to plant them. And here lies a golden opportunity to bring wonder into your lives by tending a plant and watching it grow. We invite you to Adopt-a-Plant, to take on watering it twice a week (preferably with a bottle of your bath water), to feed it once a month, and to experience with your children the wonder of the metamorphosis of a plant, and ultimately our school.
We will make this easy for you, by preparing the bed, researching the choice of plants and reminding you to fertilize once a month. This will be a kindergarten fundraising initiative, and we guarantee you prices lower than any nursery, due to the sponsorship support of the Good Hope Nursery and the Tokai Compost Makers.
The vision is to change the face of our school by beautifying it through this initiative. But this is not the only aim. We also wish to give our children this experience it is a family activity. We will all learn on three levels. Firstly in the body, we will implicitly experience the biology of plant growth, saving water and a strengthening of our will through sustaining this relationship. Secondly in the soul, through this tending of a plant we will stimulate our love and caring. This activity will create an environment which will uplift us through its beauty, and bring us a sense of pride as we watch our school transform. And thirdly in the spirit, we will gain more reverence and more wonder. And through observing a plant metamorphosise through time, we will come to understand how no thing in life is fixed, how no thing is only as it seems in that moment; through the observation of change we will learn that all things are unfinished, and it will leave us with a strengthened imagination for the potential which lies in all things.
In the darkness of earth the seeds are awakened,
In the power of the air the plants are quickened,
In the might of the sun the fruits are ripened.
In the shrine of the heart the soul is awakened,
In the light of the world the spirit is quickened,
In the glory of God, man's powers are ripened.
